Tuesday, September 30:
  • Warm-Up
  • Finish Body Paragraph Notes
  • Quiz:  Parts of Speech
  • Read "Cinderella" and highlight/underline qualities that make it a folktale.  In addition, complete the exercise sheet - determine if certain sentences from the story are concrete details or commentary.
Wednesday, October 1:
  • Warm-Up
  • Discuss "Cinderella" (both the folktale qualities and body paragraph elements)
  • Read "Slow, the Weaver" and "The Brahman's Dream" aloud in small groups (p. 146 in the literature textbook)
  • HW:  Complete the questions on the handout for both stories.  Due tomorrow.
Thursday, October 2:
  • Warm-Up
  • Read "Green Willow" aloud in small groups (p. 8) and complete the active reading worksheet as you read.
Friday, October 3:
  • Fiction Friday #2:
    • Read your choice book.  Continue to do so even after you finish your reading log.  
    • Complete your reading log: write one summary paragraph, one analytic paragraph, and one personal reaction paragraph.  Follow the directions on the handout given to you.  This is due at the end of the hour.

Week of September 22-26

Monday, September 22:
  • Warm-Up
  • Pass out and discuss handout/guidelines of Non-Fiction Friday. 
    • Students will bring an article to class every other Friday (switching between Fiction and Non-Fiction days) and respond to questions listed on the handout. Students will have 15 minutes to respond to and turn in the answers to the questions, along with the article itself. 
    • Next, a student will be chosen at random (through a number generator) to read his or her article aloud to the class. The same student will then lead discussion on the article by asking open-ended questions and calling on students, whose hands are raised, to respond. Discussion will continue until the end of the hour. Students receive points by responding to the article and speaking up in discussion at least once. 
    • HW:  Bring a non-fiction article to class by Friday
  • Go over Parts of Speech Review
Tuesday, September 23:
  • Warm-Up
  • Parts of Speech Election Project:
    • Your group will be assigned a part of speech.  Your job is to prove why this part of speech is the most important in the English language.  The project is in two parts:  a campaign poster and a speech.  Follow the directions on the handout and rubric as you work with your group.  You will have some time in class tomorrow to finish the project.
Wednesday, September 24:
  • Finish Parts of Speech Election Project
  • Begin group campaign speeches - we will finish tomorrow
Thursday, September 25:
  • Finish group campaign speeches
  • Non-Fiction Friday practice round
    • Read the article
    • Show quality responses to questions (for the write-up)
    • Discuss the article as a whole class.  Remember that you must offer one quality response to a discussion question for full credit.
Friday, September 26:
  • Non-Fiction Friday #1:
    • Write responses to the questions (listed on the handout) for your article (15 mins)
    • Whole-class discussion on a chosen student's article. You must speak at least once in order to receive full credit for the discussion portion of your grade.

Week of September 15-19

Monday, September 15:
  • Warm-Up
  • Discuss Fiction Friday guidelines
    • Choose a fiction book to bring to class by Friday.  You will read your fiction book and write a reading log during the hour.  The log will include a summary, analysis, and personal reaction to your choice book.  The reading log will be due at the end of the hour for 20 points.
    • Fiction Friday will occur every other Friday and will last during the entire class period.
  • Activity:  Noun or Verb?
    • Use each of the words on the handout as both nouns and verbs.  Write one sentence using the word as a noun and another sentence using the word as a verb.  We discuss the answers immediately after finishing the activity.
  • Finish and turn in "Noah and the Flood" questions
  • Discuss "Noah and the Flood"
  • HW:  Bring fiction book to class by Friday!
Tuesday, September 16:
  • Warm-Up
  • Parts of Speech Practice 2 - complete the activity in groups.  We will go over the answers as a class.
  • Begin reading "Popul Vuh" aloud in groups, with students taking turns reading aloud (p. 76).  After a few paragraphs, we will discuss our findings as a whole class before reading as a whole class (and continuing the cycle of discussion.
Wednesday, September 17:
  • Warm-Up
  • Finish reading "Popul Vuh" (p. 76) in groups and discussing the reading
Thursday, September 18:
  • No warm-up - substitute teacher
  • Complete the Parts of Speech review in groups.  Some of the questions are tricky!  We will go over and discuss on Monday.
  • Complete the chart for "Popul Vuh" on p. 86.  Due at the end of the hour.
Friday, September 19:
  • Fiction Friday #1:
    • Read your choice book.  Continue to do so even after you finish your reading log.

  • Read "Creation and the Fall" aloud in class (p. 65)
Wednesday, September 10:
  • Warm-Up
  • Finish reading and discuss "Creation and the Fall" (p. 65)
  • Notes:  Parts of Speech (using Schoolhouse Rock).  Additional notes/terminology will be added to the video notes.
  • HW:  Write a paragraph that explains how "Creation and the Fall" fits each of the criteria of a myth as described in your notes (you must use all of them).  Remember:  myth does not mean untruth!  You must use evidence from the text to support your answer.  Example:  "Creation and the Fall" explains natural phenomenon.  This is shown in the story when..."  Due tomorrow!

  • Turn in "Creation and the Fall" paragraph
  • Finish Parts of Speech Notes
  • Read "Noah and the Flood" (p. 70)

  • Complete questions #2, 3, and show how the story fits two criteria of a myth, using evidence from the text.
