  • Go over Pronoun Pre-Test
  • Notes:  Pronouns
Wednesday, December 3:
  • Warm-Up
  • The Odyssey Literary Essay information
    • Rough Draft:  Due Monday, December 15
    • Final Draft:  Due Friday, December 19
  • Notes:  How to write a thesis statement
  • Get your thesis statement approved by the end of the hour.  Once it's approved, begin writing your topic sentences.
  • HW:  Work on your body paragraph outlines (in your essay packet)
Thursday, December 4:
  • Pronoun Practice 1
  • How to use Concrete Details in an Essay (in your essay packet)
    • Demonstrate citations
    • Practice citing lines in The Odyssey
  • Work on finding quotes from The Odyssey for your essay.  You need 2 quotes per body paragraph (for a total of 4 quotes).  Make sure you include the background of the scene, the quote itself, and the proper citation.
Friday, December 5:
  • Fiction Friday #5:
    • Read your choice book.  Continue to do so even after you finish your reading log.  
    • Complete your reading log: write one summary paragraph, one analytic paragraph, and one personal reaction paragraph.  Follow the directions on the handout given to you.  This is due at the end of the hour.

  • Begin listening to Book 22 - continue filling out the processing sheet from last week.  We will periodically stop the audio to discuss the book.

  • Finish listening to Book 22

  • Commas/Semicolons study/memorization tool
  • Finish the audio version of Book 12 (p. 282) and complete the processing sheet
  • Receive Books 13-20 summary
  • The Odyssey Books 9-12 Body Paragraph - due Friday
    • Discuss the assignment
    • Time in class to get started and begin shaping/outlining the paragraph
Wednesday, November 19:
  • Quiz:  Commas/Semicolons
  • MLA formatting instructions (for Books 9-12 paragraph)
  • Discuss Books 13-20 summary
  • Begin listening to the audio version of Book 21 (p. 421).  Complete the processing sheet as you read.  The audio will be periodically stopped for discussion.

  • Finish the audio version of Book 21 (p. 430) and complete the processing sheet
  • Time in class to work on the Books 9-12 paragraph - now due Monday
  • Non-Fiction Friday tomorrow!
Friday, November 21:
  • Non-Fiction Friday #4:
    • Write responses to the questions (listed on the handout) for your article (15 mins)
    • Whole-class discussion on a chosen student's article. You must speak at least once in order to receive full credit for the discussion portion of your grade.
  • Books 9-12 quiz on Tuesday!

  • Continue reading Book 9 and complete the reading comprehension sheet
  • Once you finish the sheet, complete the additional questions for Book 9 (on the handouts table when you walk in the classroom)
  • HW:  Finish Book 9 by tomorrow (you may take a copy of the book home if you do not finish reading in class)
  • HW:  Book 9 questions due Wednesday

  • Complete and go over Comma Practice 3
  • Discuss Book 9 using polleverywhere.com
  • Begin reading Book 10 aloud in class and complete the reading comprehension sheet

Wednesday, November 5:
  • Complete and go over Comma Practice 1
  • Finish The Odyssey Background Books 1-8 notes
  • The Odyssey Agree/Disagree game:
    • One statement on a major theme of The Odyssey will be read aloud to you.  You will decide whether you strongly agree, agree, disagree, or strongly disagree with the statement.  Each corner of the room will represent one of the four answer choices.  You will move to the corner of the room that represents your opinion on the statement.  We will hold a short discussion on the reasons why students agree or disagree with the statement.  We will repeat the steps with a new statement.  This will go on until the end of the hour.
  • HW:  Comma Practice 2 due tomorrow!
Thursday, November 6:
  • Warm-Up
  • Check Comma Practice 2
  • Begin reading Book 9 aloud in class together - how to read the text, reading strategies, and metacognitive thinking will be modeled
  • Continue reading Book 9 in groups and complete the reading comprehension sheet
